Abstract
Background. Preoperative stoma marking is generally accepted as an important factor in avoiding skin complications. At our institution, patients do not receive preoperative stoma marking. Thus, our registry of stoma patients provides a means of evaluating stoma-site complications in patients who did not receive a preoperative stoma siting. Methods. A total of 214 patients, from Oct. 1992 to Jul. 2001, were reviewed in order to assess skin complications. Patients were categorized as either being underweight (Group I), normal (Group Ⅱ), or overweight & obese (Group Ⅲ) based on their BMI. All patients were followed post operatively and evaluated for skin complications by enterostomal therapists. Results. Skin complications were noted in 9 of the 214 stomas (4.2%). The complication rate was 2.7% in Group I, 4.3% in Group Ⅱ, and 6.8% in Group Ⅲ. Conclusion. Obesity in patients with a BMI greater than 25kg/m2 is an important factor when evaluating a patient for a possible stoma siting. Thus, a simple BMI can be used in the selection of patients in which preoperative stoma marking is the optimal treatment in avoiding skin complications.
