Abstract

An experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that rats of the Maudsley strains, bidirectionally selected for high and low defecation (emotional elimination) scores in the open-field test, would show differential susceptibility to experimentally induced gastric ulcers. The immobilization stress was applied to an experimental group of 48 rats of both strains, sexes, and of two different ages. It was found that: (1) the two strains did not differ significantly in number, and size of ulcers; (2) there was a significant negative correlation between ulcer severity and ambulation in the open field; (3) the difference between the sexes in ulceration was not significant; (4) younger rats were significantly more susceptible to ulceration than older rats.
