Abstract

The motion of a small (Stokes) particle suspended in an inhomogeneous turbulent, incompressible viscous stream is considered It is shown that the nonlinear interrelationship between the disordered vibrational and translational particle motions in an inhomogeneous field of turbulent pulsations specifies considerable systematic particle displacement and the transformation of the turbulent medium motion into directed motion. An estimate is made of the effects for a particle suspended in a medium whose pulsation field is stationary and varies in one direction.
