Abstract

Correlations between magnetic and magnetooptical (MO) intrinsic parameters, structure and microstructure, composition and stoichiometry, preparatlon and post-deposition annealing treatments have been investigated in the present contribution to improve Bi-Dy substituted ferrimagnetic garnet films for MO recording. Characteristics of MO media corresponding to write/erase or read process are controlled by material parameters such as gram size and homogeneity, coercitivity, Curie and compensation temperatures. It is shown that these parameters have a strong dependence, via the composition and the stoichiometry, on the sputtering conditions inside very narrow ranges of the deposition parameters.
