Abstract

This chapter aims to stock-take the basics of school governance in a world of today, which is globalized and complex. First, the relationship among those trends of change in globalization, education reform, and school governance are explored and examined. Secondly, the very meanings and definitions of school governance, as well as, the structures and components of school governance are discussed. Then, the characteristics of good school governance and policies are reviewed and delineated for the consideration of policy makers and school practitioners. Specifically, there are reviews of two research studies: one that conducted by Gabršček (2016) who mapped school governance policies in 10 countries; and one that done by Windzio, Sackmann and Martens (2005) on the typology of governance in education in a quantitative way. These two studies have important research findings for our better understanding and conceptualization of school governance in contemporary education systems. Lastly, controversial issues in the research on school governance and governance reform are discussed, which imply our research agenda on school governance in future.
