Abstract

The development of a method of modeling and analysis of inelastic structures under random excitation is summarized. The method is based on a differential equation model for hysteretic restoring force including system degradation and an equivalent linearization method for solution of response statistics. It is versatile and computationally efficient and suited for performance and safety evaluation of structural systems under severe natural or man-made hazards. Applications of the method to a variety of structural systems under earthquake excitation are given and compared with field evidence, including damage and collapse of buildings and supporting soil system, and liquefaction of sand deposits.
