Abstract

The theory of stochastic processes on a sphere is analogous to the theory of one-dimensional stochastic processes, for which the independent variable is usually regarded as time. Some concepts, terminology, and fundamental theorems from the discipline of one-dimensional time series analysis are reviewed and related to corresponding concepts and theorems for the sphere. Applications to geomagnetism and gravimetric geodesy are discussed.
