Abstract

This paper considers uplink (mobile to base station) power control for lognormal fading channels. Combining the channel and power control model with an infinite horizon discounted cost function, the optimal power control is analyzed by the HJB equation. We also develop an approximate, but highly scalable, solution to the HJB equation in terms of a Iocal polynomial approximation of the exact solution. A simple example of a single user system is used to illustrate the nearly optimal controller via the local polynomial approximation. This single user based control design may be applied to systems with large populations.
