Abstract

The process of the spread of rumour leading to the breakdown of law and order and riots when it is supported by a leader who acts as a pro-rumour source and the effect of anti-rumour sources like government media have been studied. A stochastic model has been formulated to analyse the combined effect of these sources and the impact of various control measures taken by the authorities to restore normalcy. The probabilities related to various states have been derived and the relative effects of the pro-rumour and anti-rumour sources have been discussed. The results obtained have been applied to the study of a particular case. Other applications of the model have also been suggested.
