Abstract

The role of stochastic acceleration of charged particles by turbulence or plasma waves is reviewed, with special emphasis on the acceleration of cosmic rays in the interstellar medium or supernova remnants. Observational constraints are discussed. A comparison is made between stochastic Fermi acceleration, and direct acceleration of cosmic rays by shock waves.
