Abstract

This paper describes the results of a study, which considers the aerodynamic optimization of a 2-D aerofoil, given a number of realistic but simple constraints. It is shown that this simple problem, with a realistic objective function, has a number of local optima. It is demonstrated that stochastic optimisation methods provide a distinct advantage over the more conventional methods and it is further shown that the optimal results are obtained when these methods are combined with conventional methods.
