Abstract
By stir casting method metal matrix composites of aluminium can be obtained by introducing non-metal particulates as reinforcement. The mechanical or electronic stirring can be used to avoid the settlement of particles and obtain uniform distribution into metal matrix with complete wettability. Different researchers improved tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, wear resistance, ductility and creep strength by varying the percentage reinforcements of SiCp, TiB2, Al2O3 and Si3N4. Some researchers modified stirring speed, stirring time, preheating and holding time for enhancement in mechanical properties. The micro structural investigation using optical microscope, SEM with EDS, TEM and XRD helps in characterization of morphological and material properties of the composite produced. Lightweight and high strength property of Al-MMC preferred in aerospace, construction, marine, automobiles and sports equipment’s. Thus to produce Al-MMC’s stir casting can be effectively used and the experimental setup can be modified to produce Al-MMNC’s for better mechanical properties. This paper reviewed the process parameters used, mechanical properties and micro-structure study by researchers for composites developed by stir casting.
