Abstract

Stipa hirticulmis Hatch, Valdes & Morden, from Nuevo Le6n, Mexico, is described. It differs from other Stipa species by having numerous nodes with elongated retrorsely hirsute culm internodes, and relatively short leaf blades. Stipa (Poaceae) is represented in Mexico by approximately 30 species, half of which are en- demic. The highest concentration of Stipa is in northern Mexico (Beetle 1977). While making collections in the state of Nuevo Leon in 1981, we discovered a distinctive new species of this genus. The habitat is a Pinyon-Juniper associ- ation with Stipa eminens Cav. and Aristida cur- vifolia Fourn. as the predominant understory grasses. On a subsequent visit to the locality in 1983, we found this new species to be locally common, but restricted to a mile-wide belt be- tween San Roberto Junction and Galeana along Highway 58 on the eastern slopes of the valley. The specific epithet of the new species alludes to the retrorsely hirsute culm internodes that make it a distinctive member of this flora.
