Abstract

Summary Using data gathered from a probability sample of 1,015 adult residents of Alabama, this study examines the relationships among personality traits associated with a deterministic cognitive system, fear of aging, negative stereotyping of older persons, and cognitive differentiation in the domain “old person.” The results suggest that the degree to which people have personality traits associated with a deterministic cognitive system is positively correlated with the degree of differentiation of the image of “old person.” Although these results are inconsistent with previous research emphasizing deterministic cognitive systems, they are consistent with expectations from a vigilance hypothesis.
