Abstract

Models were presented to specimens of Calcinus tibicen in an effort to determine the essential characteristics of one agonistic display, the double ambulatory raise. The responses of the crabs indicated that to be effective the model must incorporate a (1) horizontal (2) line, with an (3) enlarged portion (4) near the centre and (5) white tips on the (6) ends of the line. Magnitude of aggressiveness of the model was influenced strongly by the amount of separation of the white tips.
