Abstract
Stimulation of sexual behavior in male and female rats with 17beta-h ydroxyestra-4-en-3-one (19-nortestosterone) was investigated. 22 ovarie ctomized rats received 10 mcg estradiol benzoate sc during Week 1 3 daily injections of 8 mg dihydrotestosterone propionate (DHTP)/kg during Week 2 and 3 daily injections of 2 4 or 8 mg 19-nortestosterone propionate (19NORTP/kg) during Week 3. Each week 48 hours after treatment the rats received .5 mg progesterone and 4-6 hours later testing of the number of lordoses shown to 10 vigorous mounts by a male was recorded. Rats treated with DHTP were unreceptive. 19NORTP stimulated the majority of rats to respond although the receptivity quotient was significanlty less (p less than .001) than after estradiol benzoate treatment. Male rats were studied in a similar experiment. These results indicated that 19NORTP can stimulate receptivity in ovariectomized rats and can maintain centrally determined aspects of sexual behavior in castrated rats. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that 19NORTP undergoes central aromatization.
