In patients with advanced breast cancer, the administration of large doses of hormone resulted in an increase in hemoglobin, increase in hematocrit, reticulocytosis, and clinical signs of polycythemia. Extended studies have been performed to define this phenomenon more clearly. Radioactive chromium studies of blood volume and red cell mass have recorded an increase in the red cell mass volume. Bone marrow examinations revealed a hyperplasia of the erythroid elements without alteration of the white cell elements or megakaryocytes.
