Abstract

Stimulatory effect of cupric sulfate addition on the production of berberine was found in cell suspension cultures ofThalictrum rugosum. Maximum enhancement in berberine production was achieved by adding cupric sulfate at final concentrations between 200 to 500 μM. In addition to stimulating secondary metabolite production, addition of cupric sulfate permeabilized or lysed cells, and the culture released a large amount of berberine into the medium.
