Abstract

Both stimulated emission and absorption of surface plasmons are considered in MIM (transition metal type like) junctions. The net stimulated emission coefficient (the difference between stimulated emission and stimulated absorption) and the dielectric loss (including free carrier) coefficient for surface plasmons in an Mg-Al 2O 3-Ni structure are calculated. Net amplification of the anti-symmetric plasma wave is predicted in the IR wavelength region.
