Abstract

Abstract Quietness and endurance. Phenomena of the Christian belief in divine providence Taking examples from three different traditions of Christian spirituality (OT prophecy, P. Gerhardt's vocals for baroque hymns, D. Bonhoeffer's sermons), this essay examines quietness and endurance as phenomena of the Christian belief in divine providence. It is argued that the relationship between the individual believer and their particular situation in time and history that is highlighted by these examples is characteristic of how the theological doctrine of providence conveys the doctrine of justification to the life of the church.
