Abstract
The use of foundations internationally is growing. Yet, there are severe legal barriers that make cross-border activities cumbersome. One major problem is the lack of knowledge about the foundation sector. Although the foundation sector in Europe is at least equal in size to the US sector, there is a lack of valid data on foundations in Europe. Inconsistent definitions and the lack of a common statistical framework are the major problems. The Feasibility Study on a European Foundation Statute tries to shed some light on the foundation sector and reveals its surprisingly high economic relevance.
