AbstractGr. masc. n.stygeys, one who marks; Gr. neut. n.nema, thread; N.L. neut. n.Stigonema, segmented filament.Cyanobacteria / Subsection V / Stigonemataceae / StigonemaStigonemais a filamentous heterocystous cyanobacterium with true branching (Subsection. V) that exemplifies the structural and functional complexity of multicellular filamentous cyanobacteria. Cell differentiation results in the formation of hormogonia, simple uniserial and complex multicellular filaments with true and false branching, intercalary and marginal heterocysts. All cells are joined by pit connections (pore channels with bundled synapses of microplasmodesmata) organized during cell division.Type species:Stigonema mamillosumAgardh ex Bornet and Flahault 1886.
