Abstract

This report present the first results of archaeological tropical gastropods (Sthrophocheilus oblomgus Mull) from San Pedro de Atacama, Northern Chile. These ecofacts. used to store colorants, were identified in 21 prehistoric cemeterie throug museum collection analysis at the IIAM anda revision of the manuscripts of R.P. Gustave Le Paige. Because of their non local provenience (Eastern slope of the Andes) and obvious ritual importance, freshwater snail-shells are shown tu represent a key element in the study of contact between the pre-Columbian cultures uf northern Chile, northwestern Argentina and southwestern Bolivia, contemporary with the development of the Middle Horizon period Atacama Culture Group.
