Abstract

1. 1. Sterols were isolated from nine species of green algae. Six species contained Δ 5-sterols, two had Δ 7-sterols and one species had Δ 5,7-sterols. 2. 2. The two species of the order Cladophorales were characterized by large amounts of cholesterol, 24-methylene cholesterol and 28-isofucosterol in comparison with other species. 3. 3. In every case where it was specifically determined, sterols having an asymmetric carbon at C-24 had the 24β configuration. 4. 4. The sterol content ranged from 0·05% of the dry weight in Halimeda to 0·38% in Chlamydomonas.
