Abstract

1. 1. The sterol composition of the muscle tissue of two species of Gastropoda and one of Cephalopoda was investigated by silver nitrate-silica gel column chromatography, GC-MS and NMR. 2. 2. Gastropods Purpura haemastoma and Murex trunculus contained mainly Δ 5- sterols accompanied by small amounts of Δ 5,7- sterols . Cholesterol was the major component of the sterol mixtures. The main Δ 5,7- sterol was identified as cholesta-5,7-dien-3β-ol, accompanied by a small amount of 24-methylcholesta-5,7,22-trien-3β-ol. 3. 3. Cephalopod Loligo vulgaris contained a high percentage of cholesterol. A small quantity of cholestanol was present.
