Sterol compositions of echinoids (sea urchin, sand dollar and heart urchin)

Abstract

1. 1. The sterol compositions of five species of echinoids (sea urchin, sand dollar and heart urchin) were determined by GLC, Cholesterol was the major sterol in all animals. 2. 2. Two species of sea urchins contained high levels of C 27-sterols (98 per cent). 3. 3. Two species of sand dollars and a species of heart urchin contained considerable amounts of C 28-sterols (16–43 per cent).
