Abstract

1. 1. Sterol composition of holothurian Stichopus japonicus Selenka was isolated and studied by gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectra analyses and also by NMR-spectroscopy. 2. 2. It was shown that sterol fraction constituents are C 27, C 28, C 29, C 30-sterols with saturated and monounsaturated nucleus. The double bond in the steroidal nucleus locates at C(7)C(8). A side chains contains a double bond at C(22)C(23) or C(24)C(28). 3. 3. The structure of 20 sterols was established, three of which were found in holothurians for the first time. 4. 4. The composition of free sterol fractions is basically similar to sterols from steroid xylosides of the same species. However some sterols (15, 16, 17, 19) were present in free form and were not identified in the glycosides. 5. 5. It was shown that injection of C 14-cholesterol into Stichopus japonicus gave labelled fractions of xylosides and sulphated sterols. The percentage of labelling in the glycoside fraction was greater than in the sulphated sterol fraction.
