Abstract

The present study purposed to define gifted persons in information science based on previous researches, and to examine the characteristics of the thinking style of gifted students in information science based on Sternberg’s Theory of Mental Self-government. In addition, it purposed to suggest teaching learning methods fit for the thinking style observed in gifted students in information science based on Sternberg’s research. The subjects of this study were a group of gifted students in information science in the center of gifted students in information science selected through interview and the test of creativity, logicality and applicability and a group of ordinary students from an ordinary school. For each group, thinking style was tested using a thinking style test sheet. According to the result, gifted students in information science showed more remarkable tendencies of thinking than ordinary students in the legislative type, the monarchal type, the introversive type and the liberal type. TTiat is, gifted students in information science preferred unstructured works and working in new ways, and they tend to be absorbed in a work alone and to have strong self confidence. According to Sternberg’s (1994) research, teaching learning methods fit for the thinking style of gifted students in information science are Q&A classes and project type classes. The present study clarified the definition of gifted persons in information science and identified the characteristics of their thinking style. The results of this study have implications in the education of gifted students in information science.
