Abstract

Abstract In May 1904, Louis Bramson embarked on a career as a commercial photographer in a southern city by starting the Royal Photo View Company in Louisville, Kentucky. He established a family business that he, and later his only child Stern, would run for almost 70 years. Louis Bramson, a native of Germany, had arrived in Des Moines, Iowa, with his family at the age of three years in 1883.1 He received his photographic training while employed by Robinson and Rol in Chicago. Louis and his older brother, Abe, had served their apprenticeship as photographer's assistants at the Columbian Exposition, and remained in Chicago with the firm to complete their training. Abe returned to Des Moines, where he opened what would become a successful portrait studio, but Louis headed south to pursue his fortunes, eventually settling in Louisville.
