Abstract

Materials/Methods IMRT plans were designed for 9 cases of spinal metastases. Each case was planned with 3, 5, 7, and 9 beams. For Tand L-spine tumors, the majority of the beams were arranged posteriorly. For C-spine tumors the beams were arranged uniformly around the patient. Dose prescription was 16 Gy to cover the PTV (Planning Target Volume). Organs at risk (OARs) included the spinal cord limited to 14 Gy maximum dose and esophagus limited to 15Gy maximum dose. Dose calculation was performed using a commercial treatment planning system (XiO-CMS from Elekta) and an in-house Monte Carlo toolkit. Conformity Index (CI), Homogeneity Index (HI) and maximum dose received by each OAR were computed as metric to score the beam configuration. The Monte Carlo dose calculation was used to subsequently assess the PTV dose estimates obtained from CMS.
