Abstract

Ten observers estimated stereoscopic depth arising from matrix-defined disparate forms in the absence of contour or edge disparities. Magnitude of depth varied directly with the lateral displacement of the form and the shape of the stereoscopic form and the disparate form in the half-images was similar, just as in the case of contour disparate stereograms. The findings suggest that the concept of disparity must not be limited solely to contours or edges.
