Abstract

Mutual separation characteristics have been investigated for neighboring rare earth elements from the multicomponent oxide mixtures La2O3-CeO2-Pr6O11-Nd2O3 and Y2O3-La2O3-CeO2-Pr6O11-Nd2O3 using a stepwise chlorination-chemical vapor transport (SC-CVT) reaction mediated by vapor complexes LnAl(n)Cl(3n+3) within 6 h. The results show that the total CVT amounts of La, Pr and Nd and the separation factors of Pr:Nd and Nd:Pr from the quaternary oxide mixture are much higher for the SC-CVT reaction than for the conventional CVT reaction. An efficient SC-CVT separation between Y and La is also observed from the quinary oxide mixture. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
