Abstract

Envelope tracking (ET) is one of the important techniques for greatly improving the efficiency of the power amplifier since it employs an ET power supply to provide a dynamic voltage that tracks the envelope of the radio frequency signal. In order to achieve a compact design of the ET power supply consisting of a multilevel converter and a linear amplifier, which are connected in series, this letter proposes a step-wave switched capacitor converter to realize the multilevel converter, which uses less magnetic components and is easier for integration. A prototype is fabricated and tested, aiming for a 5-MHz envelope signal tracking with maximum output power of 16.7 W. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter, and the efficiency of ET power supply is 73.6%.
