Abstract

The Race Relations Act 1976 (modelled on the Sex Discrimination Act 1975) made it a statutory offence to discriminate against a person on the grounds on race. Racial grounds are defined widely as meaning colour, race, nationality, or ethnic or national origin (S.3). Ethnic is wider than race and covers a group with a long-term shared history with a cultural tradition, social customs and manners. Discrimination could take three forms: direct, indirect and victimization.
