Abstract

Five-year-old walnut trees were pruned for 3 consecutive years to remove branches from 0, 20, 40, 60, or 80% of the total length of the main stem. Increasing the amount of branch removal caused greater height growth, more cylindrical stems, and more stem sprouts, with the most pronounced response to the 60 and 80% pruning treatments. The response may be related to the relatively slow growth of the trees, wide spacing in the plantation, and early initiation and annual repetition of the pruning treatments.
