Abstract
The gooey stream of fat that plastic surgeons pull from pudgy tummies and thighs during liposuction may one day treat a host of medical conditions. Fat (or adipose tissue) actually contains stem cells that can differentiate into many cell types. Like stem cells from other sources, adipose stem cells (or ASC) take on the characteristics of the surrounding environment. Such flexibility means that fat stem cells hold the potential to treat a broad range of diseases and conditions.
