Abstract
Efforts to foster STEM education in Brazil are constrained by the myriad cultures, social dynamics and economic characteristics that have long been in constant transformation. The geographical heterogeneity results in a high degree of complexity for any STEM education policy, as well as its corresponding impact. A policy implemented in the state of Sao Paulo can have a very different impact in states elsewhere in Brazil. In this context, the main challenges that are true for STEM education are also the same for the Brazilian education system. In addition, policies have been promoted that focus on improving the qualifications of teaching staff in the Brazilian higher education system, and supporting those engaged in advanced training. The orienting principles for education programmes are established in the Federal Constitution and the National Education Law. The education system is managed and organized by various levels of government and public administration; the federal government, the states, the federal district and the municipalities.
