Chamberlain, Joseph W. ; Oliver, Norman J. Abstract Evidence is presented that the blue and violet regions of the light of the night sky are primarily composed of starlight rather than airglow emission. Most of the features heretofore believed to be emission bands are probably unreal, the deceptive appearance being produced by surrounding absorption lines. This interpretation not only explains numerous previously unidentified features but also may reconcile the observed intensities of true emissions with their theoretical transition probabilities. Moreover, the night-sky continuum, so predominant in the blue, is attributed to stellar, not to airglow, radintion.
