Abstract

Abstract The Stein-rule estimator for multivariate, unequal variance problems proposed by Morris in 1983 is applied to timber volume removal data from 11 counties in Louisiana. The estimator compared favorably to the standard sample mean in simulation trials with two sampling rules. The county means were closer to each other and had larger variances for hardwood removals than for softwood removals. Thus the gains were larger (up to 50% reductions in squared error) for hardwood removals, but there were substantial gains (10-30%) for softwood removals also. For. Sci. 33(4):1054-1061.
