Abstract

There's a body of literature on the software factory that might lead readers to believe that software development is analogous to manufacturing: requirements enter one end of a pipeline; tested code exits the other. In The Principles of Product Development Flow, Donald Reinertsen challenged this paradigm, proposing that a flow-based model is more applicable. Reinertsen's principles apply to both communication networks and software development workflows, and network optimization approaches are applicable to software development workflows.
