Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation conducted on full-scale rectangular concrete slab specimens with the objective to examine the feasibility of using steel fibers alone in the concrete instead of the conventional reinforcement. The strength and flexural response of the steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) slab specimens was found to be comparable to that of an equivalent control reinforced concrete (RC) slab. The test specimens carried the service load with the mid-span deflection well within the limits prescribed by the design guidelines, thereby indicating a possibility to replace, safely, the conventional reinforcing bars in RC slabs by steel fibers. The paper also proposes an improved theoretical formulation for the analysis and design of SFRC slabs.
