Abstract

India's new Ministry of Earth Sciences is at the helm of ambitious plans to advance deep-sea and polar research. K. S. Jayaraman reports. India is not traditionally a big player in oceanography, but things are changing. The country is well placed geographically to explore the relatively neglected Indian and Southern Oceans. Both contain major underwater geological features and, of practical importance in the region, both are involved in the formation of the Indian monsoon. India's new Ministry of Earth Sciences has announced ambitious plans for deep-sea and polar research, and India is to join the Integrated Ocean Drilling Programme. K. S. Jayaraman has talked to India's new wave of ocean scientists.
