Abstract
1. 1. Clibanarius vittatus regulates its hemolymph hyperosmotic to the medium at salinities ranging from 5 to 50‰ The maintenance of a constant hemolymph osmolality at low salinities switches to the maintenance of an osmotic concentration a set difference above the medium at salinities greater than 20‰ 2. 2. Hemolymph chloride ion concentration is regulated hyperionic to the external medium in salinities below 15‰, and is hypoionic to the medium at higher salinities. 3. 3. When in its shell, the hermit crab is a good volume regulator as evidenced by no change in percent body water over a wide range of salinities. 4. 4. The shell offers protection to the crab and aids in the regulation of osmotic pressure and water balance in dilute media.
