Abstract

The current status of the India based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is summarized. The main physics goals are described followed by the motivation for building a magnetised iron calorimetric (ICAL) detector. The charge identification capability of ICAL would make it complementary to large water Cerenkov and other detectors worldwide. The status of the design of the 50 kton magnet, the construction of a prototype ICAL detector, the experience with resistive plate chambers which will be the active elements in ICAL and the status of the associated electronics and data acquisition system will be presented.
