Abstract

Summing up this description of the major actors in the field of aging, it should be emphasized that responsibility for the elderly remains polarized rather than shared. The state and informal sectors are still the predominant sources of welfare services available for older Poles. Private and voluntary efforts are rare and there is very little cooperation and interaction between them and the state and other informal sectors. Thus, in spite of the political-economic transformation taking place in the country and the great economic deprivation of dependent groups, the “state- family” welfare model has not changed significantly. The main shift that can be observed to date is a certain withdrawal of the state from care services for the elderly.
