Abstract

The last few years have had a negative effect on the socioeconomic situation of the elderly. The future is nto very promising, either. It is known how long older workers have been genuinely without work nor how long they have been without unemployment benefits or pensions. The expected trend is that there will be a mass of unprotected persons over age 50, and even over 40 or 45, who have lost or will lose their jobs and be unprotected by any type of social security for a period of time. The other main problem is the withdrawal of the state from the social welfare arena. The increasing number of voluntary organizations are obviously unable to cope with the mass of tasks, including the problems of the elderly, that have been imposed on it. Due to the extensive impoverishment of the nation and the rapid withdrawal of the state from social programs, the majority of retired people and people of pensionable age are disappearing into a black hole without social security coverage. At the same time, innovative service practices previously not known in Hungary are appearing, but principally for those who can afford them.
