Abstract

This article analyzes the system of stratification in a naval research and development laboratory, using questionnaire data provided by laboratory personnel. Seven major status groups were identified and their relative prestige examined. The relationships of background factors, behavior and attitudes, and esteem to status were then analyzed. Finally the interrelationships of esteem variables were explored. Clovis Shepherd is a fellow of the Social Science Research Council.
