Abstract

Health Care in Hungary is almost exclusively provided by the National Health Service. The National Health Insurance Bureau finances health care providers retrospectively according to their accomplishment. Health care expenditure in Hungary was only 5.7% of the GDP in 2000, decreasing year by year, while in most European Countries this measure is around 7%. This is unacceptably low keeping in mind that the price of modern diagnostics and treatment is rising and we pay the same price as more developed countries. On top of this financial situation, the Hungarian health status is one of the worst in Europe. Life expectancy is approximately 10 years lower than in Europe (71.7 years) and cardiovascular mortality is higher than in most European countries.
