Abstract

Numerous experimental observations strongly support that universe consists of 96% of the dark matter and dark energy. Dark matter could exist in the form of the particles known as Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), relics from the early universe. XENON100 is a dual phase liquid/gas xenon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) operated at cryogenic temperature for the direct search of the dark matter WIMPs. The detector, located in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy, is designed and constructed to measure the recoil energy from elastic WIMP‐nucleus scattering. The very low background detector has 65 kg of liquid xenon fiducial mass and 105 kg in the active veto. First test measurements have been already started in 2008. The current status of the XENON 100 experiment and plans for the future upgrade are presented.
