Abstract
One of the focal points of the R&D for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Engineering Design Activity (EDA) was the construction of a model coil (CSMC) for the central solenoid and insert coils for test within the model coil. The program was coordinated by the Joint Central Team (JCT) and involved a collaborative effort for component development, coil, and structure manufacture, among the home teams from the European Union (EUHT), Japan (JAHT), Russian Federation (RFHT) and the United States (USHT). The 180 tonne coils and structure have now been installed in a test facility at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Naka, Japan and testing will begin late in 1999. An overview of the system, program history and testing goals are given in this paper.
